It has been described as the best entertainment in Kabul, the Afghan Capital. It is the city’s wedding season, which now takes a break for the holy month of Ramadan. The weddings are popular and profitable and although the average government worker earns only 60 dollars a month, a wedding with all the trimmings, will cost thousands. As Alan Fisher reports, it has a marked change from how weddings were held in the time of the Taliban.

There is something really strange and disturbing about “parts of Afghanistan looking like Las Vegas” Its sort of depicting two extreme ends of the spectrum…on the one hand you have an unstable, corrupt “government” if it could even be called a government (as the role of a gov’t is to protect its people, which it obviously hasn’t).. and on the other hand you have penny worth parasites living like millionaires amongst all the poverty surrounding them…it’s like tangled hair in need of a comb.
@fredfelosofar .I couldn’t agree with you more, marriage in Islam is made of two components. The first being the obligatory (fard) which is the contractual side in which both sides stipulate what they want, for example if the bride does not wish to take part in house chores or want her husband to take a second wife this is the time for her to speak. The second part is sunna (practise of the Prophet PBUH in which you feed people, and like urself he said “the best is the one who feeds the poor”
Expensive weddings are not a good idea because of many reasons: Not everybody can afford these kinds of weddings and the poor class feels obligated to compete with the rich, otherwise they can’t find women to marry. Also according to Islam its not allowed to exceed the limit of spending. Its only one night in your life, why not spend that money to feed the poor or pay a down payment of a house?
