USA for Africa (United Support of Artists for Africa), was the name under which forty-five predominantly US artists, led by Harry Belafonte, Kenny Rogers, Michael Jackson, and Lionel Richie, recorded the hit single “We Are the World” in 1985. The song was a US and UK Number One for the collective in April of that year. The considerable profits from the enterprise went to the USA for Africa Foundation, which used them for the relief of famine and disease in Africa; critics, however, claim that this money went directly to the (often military) governments of the affected countries rather than the people. A recording of the live performance was released with the Live Aid DVD set released on November 8, 2004.

Article by Paul Mitchell
In 1995, as CineVic Society of Independent Filmmakers, joined with Origins Theatre to form the Victoria Film Festival, their vision was to establish an annual independent film event in Victoria with a worldwide reputation yet be an intrinsic part of the local community which would serve as a milestone in the careers of young artists and filmmakers it sought to embrace. As this year’s fesival unfolds, running through February 13, the festival’s Sips ‘n’ Cinema sessions follow film screenings at the Legacy Art Gallery, featuring an evening of wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres and engaging discussion of the film just screened.

Recorded on February 1st, 2010, in the same studio as the original 25 years earlier (Henson Recording Studios, formerly A&M Recording Studios) “We Are The World 25 For Haiti”, in which Jones and Richie serve as executive producers and producers, was created in collaboration with executive producers Wyclef Jean, Randy Phillips and Peter Tortorici; producers Humberto Gattica and RedOne; and co-producers Rickey Minor, Mervyn Warren and Patti Austin to benefit the Haitian earthquake relief efforts and the rebuilding of Haiti. Academy Award-winning writer-director Paul Haggis (Crash, Million Dollar Baby), whose own personal efforts as well as those of Artists for Peace and Justice have already saved countless lives in Haiti, filmed the private recording session to create the accompanying video and behind-the-scenes production, and serves as Film Director and as an Executive Producer with Jones, Richie, Jean, Phillips and Tortorici. I do admit that I am a rather proud California resident. The west coast is where Linden Labs was born and the magical idea of Second Life.
California has the beauty and ruggedness of Northern California and the glitz and gorgeous weather of Southern California.
Today, on the grid, we are at San Diego’s The Majestic for live music featuring blues man Mighty Joe Milsap & Fremonts streaming live from The Boondocks Lounge in Tucson, AZ courtesy of Tone Uriza.
Right next door to The Majestic is a small chapel replica of San Diego’s original missions on the scenic drive.
Makes me feel right at home… in California… a place I love.
